Dr. Watson

4. Characterize Dr. Watson in the movie
He is Holmes' doctor, assistant and friend.
He's taking care of Holmes, and he knows, what Holmes's thinking. He's like a part of Holmes' brain.
He's Holmes' helper as a friend, but at the same time he's like the mother of Holmes.

He's engaged to Mary.
He's serious, mature and thoughtful.
He cares about how he looks (hygienic, well-dressed)
He's considerate, polite and more sensitive than Holmes.
He's not a loner but still he's not very social.
He's wise and a little boring.
He seems to be reliable and faithful.

His role is bigger in the movie than in the book. He has "no personality" in the book. He's just doing the paper-work in the book, following Holmes like a dog.

Questions for the SH movie

3. Compare him to the Sherlock Holmes in The Greek Interpreter

In the movie SH is still intelligent. He is a private person (hold back his plan for others), has few friendship and is still focusing on the science (with clues, evidence and so on) not magic!

Contradictions:

The Greek Interpreter
Movie
“Brain without a heart” à unemotional
Emotional (feelings for Irene Adler, will not let Dr Watson move out)
Solve the cases with intelligent, clues, observations etc.
Solve also with intelligent etc. but fights against villains à more athletic
Unknown hero
Action hero, in the papers and so on

English - Sherlock Holmes question 6 and 7

6) Comment on Holmes and Watson relationship in the movie:
- Holmes and Watson, “brothers of bond”, they are best friends. It seems like they can discuss with each other without being that angry at each other.  They don’t really talk about their feelings, and we think it’s because they know each other so well, but we conclude that Holmes are getting a little jealous about Mary (Watsons wife to be), maybe because he is afraid if she will come in between. Why they don’t show their feelings can also be, that they want to be macho. They are men, and they are detectives, so it will not fit in if they were sentimental.
They have an “on even” relationship, because it seems that Holmes need Watson more than the other way around. We see it when Watson wants to get married, but Holmes is still in his exciting world, where he and Watson are doing everything together. Watson is ready to move on, he don’t want to lose Holmes, but he is ready to take a new step in his life.
They have a good teamwork; they supply each other, because they have different rules, when they are trying to solve a problem. We see it like Watson is the sensible one, and Holmes is the one with all the ideas and thoughts. We think that Watson is the sensible one because, he don’t got all these confusing thoughts about everything, he is the one who hold all the thoughts which are in Holmes head together.
7) Which crime fiction tradition (GB or Amr) does the movie belong to? And why?
- It is very obvious that is an crime fiction movie based on American elements. It’s very American, because there is a lot of action and violence. There is also Hollywood element like a little romance, which is left out in the text about Sherlock Holmes. There is a macho loner, based on the main character. There is also hero vs. bad guys. So we can conclude that it is very American, because of all these typical American effects.

Sherlock Holmes - Question 1

Comment on the composition of the movie. Any flashbacks etc.?

The composition is chronological, with flashbacks and flashforwards.

There are many flash backs , for example in the end were Sherlock realizes the entire plot. The flashbacks go back and explain, in the movie. They make it easier for the viewer to understand the complicated plot.

Flash forward happens everytime Sherlock is fighting someone, in the beginning in a church were he saves the girl and in the boxing match. It makes Sherlock seem very clever, because he can predict what is going to happen. He has everything thought out.

The movie has an  open ending, makes us wonder what is going to happen in the next movie - and how the next mystery is solved.
There is two plots - when the first one ends(is solved - bad guy caught) the next one begins.
